Blog http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk Wed, 09 Oct 2013 05:30:48 +0000 en-gb They called it "Switch Selling" years ago http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/blog/item/37-switch-selling http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/blog/item/37-switch-selling They called it

They would advertise a branded ‘Rebuilt’ Sewing Machine for £10! Then set up a home demonstration of the machine.

During demonstration the machine would literally disintegrate in front of their eyes.

The cotton thread would jam; parts would fall off, even the occasional whiff of the motor overheating added to the fiasco.

In mock frustration the salesman would throw up his hands in horror, then tell his disappointed audience that he just happens to have a demonstration model of the very latest ‘all singing, all dancing’ super model in his car.

In comes the new model which performs every programme known to man. The couple sit there in amazement. Out pops the order book and the £10 they were ready to pay now acts as their down payment for the latest technology with the rest on ‘easy payments’!

That’s how Switch selling works. You advertise one thing and sell another!!

Of course, the practice was eventually legislated against and banned.

The only favourable part of the practice was that at least the ‘victim’ got something that was generally top of the range for their money. Rather than ending up with a load of junk.

What's all this got to do with Hair Restoration I hear you ask?

Very recently I began seeing advertising from one of our competitors offering F.U.E. (follicular Unit Extraction) at incredibly low costs.

£2000 for 20000 grafts!! - That's cheap!

They also equated 2000 grafts to 4000 hairs, stating that 1 graft equaled 2 hairs?

Most people researching HTS will know that grafts differ in hair content. Some are single hair grafts, some 2/3 hair grafts, 4 /5, and even 6 hair grafts.

I kept staring at what they were offering, wondering why they had purposefully equated 2000 grafts to 4000 hair? Why would they stipulate 2 hair grafts like it was the norm?

Then the penny dropped!

It was so obvious and was starting me on the face. THEY HAVE DROPPED THE ‘SELECTION’ PROCESS’!! One of the key features of the F.U.E., technique.

The process that every surgeon and doctor worth their salt conducts. When they and their assistants took time to search for the grafts with the bigger numbers of hairs. To ensure their patients achieve as much volume as is possible.

GONE! THEY'VE SCRAPPED IT? - INCREDIBLE - I'M ASTOUNDED - YOU JUST COULDN'T MAKE IT UP!

They had stipulated 2 hairs per graft to cover themselves against any backlash. They had even advertised 2000 grafts = 4000 hairs like it was a ‘positive’ which to the uninitiated would seem like great value.

When in reality, without the ‘Selection’ process, 4000 hairs is about the lowest ‘harvest’ that one would expect from 2000 grafts.

When the F.U.E. Procedure first became an option, back in 2004, the I.S.H.R.S. (The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) gave the average content of the Follicular Unit as 2.1 hairs.

The expected harvest was around 2100 hairs from 2000 grafts. However, in later years the figures quoted by the I.S.H.R.S., have jumped dramatically to as high as 2.6. A figure the Society attributed to the more experienced surgeon’s.

So had the clinic in question retained the Selection process and had their patient’s best interests at heart, they could have increased their patient’s ‘harvest’ from an estimated 4000 hairs to a potential of up to 5200 hairs?

Added to which, they would have saved their patients valuable ‘donor grafts’ for any future procedure they may need.

I've met a good many former patients who have run out of donor grafts, leaving body-hair grafts as their only alternative.

At risk of repeating myself, to save time and money, this clinic have abolished one of the single most important benefits of F.U.E, the ‘key’ process of ‘Selection’?

They have replaced this process with ‘Ad Hoc’ extraction, simply to save time.

They are simply plucking the grafts out of the scalp like plucking a Chicken! No records of hair content. No planned usage of bigger grafts for maximum volume? Nothing. Just the 4000 hairs!

No wonder they're offering such low prices!!

As I said in my opening comments, they used to call it ‘Switch-Selling’ years ago? You advertise one thing and sell another.

What title would you give it these days?

As this is a ‘hair related’ blog, how about ‘‘Swatch Selling’?

John from Scotland http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/feedback/item/7-john-from-scotland http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/feedback/item/7-john-from-scotland John from Scotland

From John C (Scotland) Here are some images of john, both before, during and after his procedure. (please click each image to enlarge)

I have always had a hairline that was slightly receded but it never went any further back up until I turned 32.I started to notice just after my son was born that I had become a little thin at the front and I had a bit of thinning just behind my front hair line. I knew I had to do something about this so I went about this and started my hair transplant research there and then this was just over three years ago as I wanted to know what I could do to stop this .I then seen an ad in my local newspaper for the clinic, so I called them and spoke to Malcolm who gave me some advise and we also had a short discussion on what he could offer me with regards my own hair loss problem.

before-during-afterHe also advised me to speak to a former patient to ask him about his results and his experience which put me straight at ease as there was no pressure from Malcolm at any point. If you didn't know as I didn't at that time we all should speak to former patients get the facts & evidence from them as they are the best people to tell you the truth about any organisation and there experience.

I called this person who I must say was very sympathetic to my situation as he could relate to every thing I was saying as he had went through the same emotion's I had. We agreed to met up which we did at his home and he gave me all his knowledge and expertise into this subject and spoke very highly with regards HDHT & Malcolm and his team at the clinic he also discussed his procedure & results which were evident to see at first hand he also showed me picture evidence of his procedure to validate his experience.

I remember( laughing now) that I had asked this person if I could pull his hair as the main reason was that it looked that good and natural I didn't think he had had anything done until as I said previously he showed me his photographic evidence.

I must admit even now I didn't think he would let me but he did and he let me go though his hair and have a close up look were I could see no scaring what to so ever or any baldness to his head . He was proud of what he had achieved , his procedure was two years before so all of his new hairs had grown in.

At that time I didn't think for one minute that you could achieve a result like that but here was the evidence to prove it. He also spoke about his procedure and how he was very impressed by the service he had received from Malcolm and his team.

I must admit it was the best way to get help and the confidence I needed as well as the knowledge to know that you are not just stuck with the fear of receding further or indeed going completely bald you can do something about and again here was the proof.

On my return to my house that that evening I had a full discussion with my partner Margaret who knew what I was doing and completely back me up 100% and I decided that evening to go head with booking my own procedure.

Unfortunately I was diagnosed with a major heart condition (dilated cardiomyopathy only a month later at the grand old age of 32 which put everything on hold hence the three year wait. I have since been advised by my cardiologist after numerous tests and some medication that I am fully fit to resume my life.

During this time I had a lot of time to think things through and had promised myself that if I could get through this then the first thing I would do is sort out my hair loss problem.I gave Malcolm a call one month later and we arranged to meet up in Manchester.

We had a very relaxed no pressure meeting where we talked over what I wanted and what expectations I had and also what he could offer me. Malcolm was over in the UK as promised on one of his business trips. He examined my hair loss and advised that although my problem was minor he could fix this with an F.U.E. session he advised me on the price of the procedure and again didn't put any pressure on me he advised me to contact him if and when I was ready.

Malcolm was made aware of my heart conditions at that meeting. He arranged a special meeting with his surgeon when he got back to discuss if I could have this procedure before I made any payment in vain.

It was clear to me at this stage I could trust this man. Malcolm gave me the name of the anaesthetic and confirmed he had been given the go ahead by the surgeon that it was perfectly safe to have the procedure if I wanted to. I passed the name of the anaesthetic onto my GP who confirmed that the surgeon was correct with his information which gave me more confidence in Malcolms Team.

The Family and me decided to take a 4 day holiday to Athens were I could get my procedure done and Margaret could go shopping with our Son and relax in the warm sunshine. We landed at 00:40 in the Morning and sure to his word Malcolm was there to pick us up and take us to the hotel.

The hotel was clean and very relaxing with a lovely roof top pool with some stunning views I must also mention the food was excellent along with a well stocked bar for refreshments( I am a Scotsman after all) ,the staff were very welcoming and they were aware of why I was there, they treated my family with a great deal of hospitality and myself with a great deal of confidentiality if you wanted a quite night you could have that if you wanted to have a lively night then you could have that too.

I can confirm that what Malcolm advertises he will provide you with this, as his former patients will describe on his web site they are all 100% correct (I am now proud to say that I am a former patient)You get what he says you will and you will get it at a far better price than anywhere in the UK or the USA .

I can confirm that the surgeon and his team are at the top of their game and that the clinic is absolutely spotless. I can also ensure anyone that the procedure was so painless and easy that I actually fell asleep during the procedure as it was that relaxed ,I would not hesitated to come back if it is is required but this I will doubt very much as it will not be needed .

I had the FUE procedure done which is where I have had the hairs taken out one by one from the back of my head & transplanted into the area's where I wanted and needed them. I got 2,500 new hairs to the front of my hair line which is completely packed with new healthy hairs just ready to starting growing.In-fact they have already started to and this was only 5 weeks ago.I am so pleased that I found Malcolm and his clinic as it has completely changed my life for the better.

Malcolm does what he says he will he is the most honest and hard working man you will meet
I have in fact had Malcolm stay with myself and my family after we returned home, this was due to Malcolm being back here in Scotland on business. I thought it only descent to return the hospitality and welcome we received in Athens.

I have seen first hand what can be achieved at HDHT and I am testament to what can be done and what value you will get for your money. This is a highly competitive market but be assured if you choose HDHT you will be guaranteed a great all round quality service and experience that only his competitors can wish they could offer at the price he offers.

Warm Regards,

John

Jon from Bath http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/feedback/item/2-jon-from-bath http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/feedback/item/2-jon-from-bath Jon from Bath

Over the last six years or so I have had three procedures with Mal and his team in Athens, and each has been a positive and enjoyable experience.

The first two were to 'keep ahead of the game' as I had lost some hair, but the third was pure vanity. I didn't really need it but I just wanted to see how far I could go towards a full head of hair.

In my mid-30's my hair had receded a little at the temples and was also thinning in the crown area. I wanted a hair transplant and the results I had seen online seemed to be pretty good.

I researched a lot of companies, but my decision to go with Mal was based on meeting him. I was impressed with the fact that he had undergone the procedure himself with the same surgeon, and although he was fifteen years or so older than me, he had a really natural looking full head of hair (and still does!).

The first procedure was to thicken up the crown area and I underwent a 'strip removal' to achieve this. It was completely painless and the results were fantastic (no more thin crown), although I never experienced a dramatic change in my appearance as I had basically just thickened up an area. To all intents and purposes I looked the same, a guy with a pretty good head of curly hair.

A couple years later, I decided to go back and have the front hairline lowered slightly. I was a little apprehensive about this as I wanted a natural looking result. I shouldn't have worried though, as once again the result was great and I was really pleased to be aware of a thicker, lower front hairline.

Recently, I decided to go for a third and final 'vanity' procedure. Mal had told me about an new instrument that his team were using that refines and speeds up the process of F.U.E. (he could explain in more detail). As I had had two strip procedures previously I decided to give it a go.

Mal was as welcoming and professional as ever and the morning after my arrival in Athens I went to the clinic for my final procedure.

This time, rather than an incision and a strip being removed to harvest the hair, small patches were shaved at the back of my head. (They were also careful to ensure that these would be covered by other hair in the area).

The new FUE instrument was used to remove the hair follicles and I had a little general thickening done as well as a further slight lowering of my hairline, as I said, pure vanity.

I would say that having experienced both types of procedure, for me this was slightly preferable as there is no scar to heal up. Having said that, the advantage of using this instrument in addition to a strip procedure, allows even more hair to be grafted during a single session. It seems to me that the procedure is being refined and improved year on year, which is great news for anyone, male or female suffering hair loss.

I've benefitted from the experience of Mal and his team, three times. Each time has been positive and enjoyable. I would not hesitate to recommend Mal, and I have offered to speak to anyone thinking of having the procedure with him in Athens.

Jon, Bristol UK – September 2011.

I started life as a High Density Hair Transplant patient and now help occasionally on the patient support side in the UK.

I had my transplant surgery in Oct last year and the results have literally transformed my looks and confidence. I've added some of my pics so you can see for yourself. The first one was taken the day before my procedure. I went to Athen's with my two girls and we enjoyed a week in the sun at the same time. As you can see my hair loss was significant.

The second pic was taken in June 2013, you can see growth is coming through but the hair is still getting established. The whole growth phase takes up to 12 months to complete so nobody will know you will have had surgery if you don't want them to.

barry-hair-transplant-resultsThe last pic was taken last week. As you can see the hair is much thicker and more established. I have just returned from Athens having had a second procedure to lower my hairline slightly and build up my density. This was mainly due to the extent of my baldness but you may not need to have more than one. I know that this time next year I will have a full head of healthy hair and will look and feel great.

Hope these pictures help to confirm your decision to use HDHT for your treatment. I can't thank Mal and his team enough for what they did for me. There really is no better or cheaper treatment out there.

I get into London every Wednesday and Friday and work around the Holborn / Chancery Lane area. Give me a call on my mobile 0779 668 6247 and we can arrange a meeting to answer any questions you might have and to assess your suitability for surgery.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Cristo Foufas, one of London's top radio presenters, talks about his hair transplant procedure. "I came to HDHT as I was starting to get self-conscious about my hair loss, and wanted a solution which was reasonably priced, but more importantly not too painful!"

I'd had consultations about other procedures before which seemed to be quite invasive, especially as they involved physically cutting my scalp, something I really wasn't keen on having done.

I was extremely relieved when HDHT explained to me that their procedure, put quite simply, involved the transplanting of individual hairs from the back of my head, onto the top. The only pain I would feel would be from a needle, the kind you get from an injection, far less intrusive than my scalp actually being cut which is what other clinics offer.

It was this, as well as the reassurance offered to me from the HDHT team which convinced me to go ahead with the treatment, and it really was the right decision for me and one which I don't regret. The procedure itself took about 6/7 hours, during which time I was looked after wonderfully by the team, who answered all my questions (I had quite a lot!) and kept providing me with reassurance. I genuinely felt I was in the hands of professionals. I was also given all the medication and information required to ensure all was well once I left the surgery.

Within a year I have growth on my head where I was once bald, which really is an astonishing result to me, bearing in mind the ease and speed of the procedure. I'd definitely recommend HDHT to others if you're looking for a cost- effective solution to your hair loss, which is carried out by friendly and caring professionals".

Seeing a Difference in Weeks http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/feedback/item/20-seeing-difference http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/feedback/item/20-seeing-difference Seeing a Difference in Weeks

I recently had a hair transplant procedure at the High Density Hair Transplant clinic in Athens, and I can honestly say that the difference in just a few short weeks is astounding!

I recently had a hair transplant procedure at the High Density Hair Transplant clinic in Athens, and I can honestly say that the difference in just a few short weeks is astounding!!! I actually have a hairline! My confidence is restored and I don't even have full results yet. Imagine how I will feel in 6 –8 months time. My family can already see the difference. It has honestly changed my life for the better already. I honestly feel quite optimistic about the future.

I never thought I'd do anything cosmetic. I'm quite squeamish and I have a low pain threshold. But I can honestly say that the procedure is a piece of cake. There is some discomfort but if I can do it, believe me anyone can! You are made to feel part of Malcolm's family during your stay in Athens. The nursing staff are top quality too. They care about your comfort and about giving you the best possible results. And I was back at work within a week without anyone noticing.

If you need any encouragement please get in touch!

Cheaper and Better! http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/feedback/item/21-cheaper-better http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/feedback/item/21-cheaper-better Cheaper and Better!

They are not only cheaper, but seemingly better, than their UK competitors. There is a real sense of thoughtfulness and a genuine pride in what they do, something that I did not get from consultations with several UK clinics. From the hospitality provided throughout, to the results I have seen so far, everything about my experience with HDHT in Athens went above and beyond all expectations.

Malcolm, the UK consultant was incredibly helpful and flexible in catering for all of mine and my girlfriend's travel plans. We were met at the airport and taken to our hotel, and even taken out for dinner and drinks on the first evening.

I had opted to have my procedure on the third day of our stay, instead of the usual second day, and Mal even offered to take us out again on our second night. On the day of the procedure, Mal drove me into Athens and even offered to go all the way back to the hotel so that my girlfriend could come with me for the first part and then get on with the rest of her day.

As we sat across the road from the clinic, having a coffee and waiting for the call that they were ready for me, I couldn't help but wonder what exactly I was letting myself in for. Not knowing what to expect as I climbed the stairs to the clinic, all of my worries dissipated within minutes of walking through the door.

The waiting room set the stage for the quality that was to follow – a big wooden office desk, leather couches and even a chandelier. When I met the assistant, Maria, I was instantly put at ease. All of the staff spoke excellent English and were overly helpful and accommodating.

When the surgeon, name?, drew my new hairline onto my head in pen and rubbed it off for maybe the 10th time, because he wasn't happy with it yet, I knew I was in the hands of a perfectionist. Small touches, like making sure my drinking water was covered when I wasn't holding it, continued to let me know that I had picked the right place, and that standards were at least as high as in the UK.

I can honestly say that the only pain I felt all day was receiving the local anaesthetic – it lasted maybe a minute. The rest of the 6-hour-day was pain free. I was made to feel comfortable throughout the procedure, and able to take a break whenever I needed. Although it seems like a long day, I was never in the same position for more than an hour, and the time flew by.

The following day Mal drove us to the ferry port as we had planned to spend the next week in Crete before flying home. In retrospect, I would have spent this week resting at home instead of on holiday – we had a very enjoyable week in Crete but I was rather limited in terms of activities I could participate in, and concerned with how noticeable my head was when out in public.

It was necessary to keep my head out of the sun for the entire week, while I felt uncomfortable going to dinner, or out to a bar, without wearing a big hat. A relaxing recovery holiday may suit some people, but these are issues that should be taken into account.

My recovery included keeping the back of my head bandaged for the first two days in order to prevent bleeding from my donor area. I also had a few sleepless nights due to mild discomfort, but, after one week, everything was back to normal. For these reasons, I personally would have felt more comfortable resting in the privacy of my own home.

Three weeks on and my donor area is only just noticeable, despite currently having my head shaved to a grade one all over. Without a shaved head I don't imagine it would be visible at all. There is no pain or irritation and I am more than happy with the progress. I'm now looking forward to seeing some new hairs coming through within the next couple of months.

I would thoroughly recommend HDHT for your hair transplant. They are not only cheaper, but seemingly better, than their UK competitors. There is a real sense of thoughtfulness and a genuine pride in what they do, something that I did not get from consultations with several UK clinics.

Wearing Thin Wayne? http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/blog/item/22-wearing-thin-wayne http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/blog/item/22-wearing-thin-wayne Wearing Thin Wayne?

On our blog we have already made clear our respect for Wayne Rooney when he was brave enough to go completely public about his hair restoration procedure. We believed it generated extremely positive publicity for our industry. However, the press are now questioning the value of his recent Hair Transplant Procedure.

Headlines asks the question, 'Is Roo's Hair Transplant wearing a bit thin already'?

Here is our take on this..... Is Transplanted Hair Permanent? Well the answer is a profound YES!

Wayne's transplanted hair will never thin because his new growth was taken from the thickest, coarsest part of his scalp where the roots are permanent and not affected by 'Male Pattern Baldness'. As with all hair follicles within the 'tonsure' zone hey will fall out and then regrow again from root at the end of their 'cycle, (approximately 6 years).

Wayne's Existing Hair

What is likely to be the case is that Wayne Rooney's new hair 'grafts' were planted at a time he had some of his original growth. This growth too will likely have fallen prey to his 'Male pattern baldness, leaving only his newly transplanted hair to compensate.

Graft Spacing

If you were able to have a closer look at Wayne's newly planted grafts, you will see that there are spaces between them. This is because initially, the grafts have to be spaced slightly apart. No closer than the graft size itself.

Planting the grafts too closely together can compromise the blood supply to the new roots. Resulting with the new grafts having to literally fight one-another for blood supply. Those that win, flourish. Those that lose will shed.

Once the original grafts have sustained their blood supply, more grafts can be planted into the spaces to achieve more density without compromising the original grafts blood supply. Which no doubt will be Wayne's next plan?

It's All About The Donor.

Achieving good density from One hair transplant is dependent on how dense the patients hair is in the 'donor' area from where the grafts are harvested.

If the patients donor hair texture is good, as opposed to lank and thin. Is pretty dense and closely packed in his or hers donor site, it's possible to achieve the desired result in One session. Then most people want as much volume as is possible and will continue onto a second procedure.

However to achieve 'close proximity' grafting is an art in itself and takes an experienced surgeon to gauge the distances between the tiny grafts.

HDHT's Surgeon Dr. Fots Tsounis has had more 17 years experience in Hair Transplanting. He and his main assistant Maria Boziaka have been working as a team for 11 years.

How Much Did Rooney pay?

Well if you read my blog, you'll read that I would imagine the publicity value to the clinic would more than compensate his getting a freebee?:

However, I've heard the price being banded around of somewhere between £20,000 and £30,000?

Glad to help you Pav http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/feedback/item/24-glad-to-help-pav http://high-density-hair-transplants.co.uk/feedback/item/24-glad-to-help-pav Glad to help you Pav

Hi Mal, Just wanted to thank you for helping me tackle an issue I have had for the last couple of years. As you know being only 26, I had pretty bad crowning and recession issues (although I had a lot of hair elsewhere) which caused me major confidence issues and I wasted a lot of time on covering up my balding areas.

Your advice and patience throughout has been invaluable to me. I am a person that believes in value and experience, which is what I felt you most succeeded in. I appreciated your one-on-one time, driving miles away just to take me out for dinner, as well as, phone calls asking how I was doing. I had no doubt about the Surgery as you made me feel very comfortable about the process, but in saying that the Doctor and his team were brilliant, made me feel comfortable throughout the procedure.

I didn't need to shop around in the UK as Mal's prices were easily the best out there. I lived in North America and looked at prices out there and he was still cheaper. One approach I appreciate about Mal is he never hard sold, he knows his team is good, he let me decide by myself and if needed, he answered any questions I had. We spoke via Skype a couple of times and answered all my questions. Even with the huge time difference, Mal answered all my emails.

I decide to go Athens were I could get my procedure done and have a holiday at the same time. Mal was there to pick me up as promised and take me to the hotel. The hotel was very nice, with very friendly staff. The complimentary breakfast was good and a good place to relax every morning, whilst browsing on the internet.

I had the FUE procedure. I was keen on not having a scar and not having to have a hair transplant in the future. I got just over 2,000 grafts in the front and crown, with the Doctor explaining this is the best option so the balding areas were packed. I am pleased to say after only 1 weeks, my hair covered the donor area at the back of my head, there is no irritation and I can now see my hair coming through at a grade 2. I finally see a path to self confidence again.

I want to finish by saying that Mal's is a great guy, who puts in a lot of effort, as well as, makes sure that the patient is always happy. I would recommend Mal and HDHT Athens to anyone.

Cheers,

Pav
